Hello BBMS Families – does it feel like we are nearing the end of the year?

It seems like yesterday that we were wondering about COVID and what the school closure would bring.  Then during the closure, our nation was rocked by a “pandemic of racism” (Dr. Martirano and Chair Ellis).  I cannot recall a more challenging time to be in school, but at the same time, I am optimistic that real change will occur.  To that end, we have built in time for students to express their voice before they head off for the summer.  We want to let our students know that we care about them and that we don’t ever want them to feel unsafe, excluded, or mistreated - especially while they are BBMS Sharks.

Conversations Around Race and Racism for Students:  Friday, June 19 and Monday, June 22 @ 10:45am – 12:15pm (*tentative).
As you may know, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is partnering with the Office of Student Access and Achievement, the Black Student Achievement Program, and the Restorative Justice Partnership to offer virtual check-ins for staff to share and process their feelings during these difficult times. To that end, the above-named offices and organization have developed a plan to offer similar check-ins for our students to assist those of you who may not be comfortable or who may be unable to engage students in these conversations themselves.  We will offer these to students through a sign-up process (Google Form).  Sign up today!

Office Hours:  Friday, June 19 and Monday, June 22.

We heard from staff that due to the HCPSS lessons this week, there may not be enough time to celebrate the end of the year with students.  We’ve designed the last three days of school to account for this so we can “finish strong” and appropriately close out classes, clubs, etc.  All Google Meets on Friday and Monday will be voluntary for students, but we wanted to allow time for teachers and students to connect to say farewell, etc.  Students do not have to stay in the session the entire time to allow those in A/B day classes to see both teachers if they choose to.

Friday, June 19:

Period 1 Office Hours = 8-8:20

Period 2 Office Hours = 8:30-8:50

Period 3 Office Hours = 9:00-9:20

Period 4 Office Hours = 9:30-9:50

Conversations Around Race and Racism for Students = 10:45-12:15… *tentative based on facilitator availability from Dr. Gilbert’s Office.

Monday, June 22:

Period 5 Office Hours = 8-8:20

Period 6 Office Hours = 8:30-8:50

Period 7 Office Hours = 9:00-9:20

Clubs/Activity Groups = 9:30-9:50

Conversations Around Race and Racism for Students = 10:45-12:15… *tentative based on facilitator availability from Dr. Gilbert’s Office.

8th Grade "Farewell" Celebration

8th Grade Celebration

June 23, 2020 @ 10am to 12pm

8th Grade Parents:  We are excited to be able to offer you the chance to come to BBMS on June 23, 2020 to help celebrate the accomplishments of this class.

We will adhere to all CDC recommendations and maintain social distancing at all times during this event, including wearing masks.

Parents of 8th grade students are invited to drive their 8th grader(s) to BBMS on June 23 using the same setup that we did for item pickup/drop off last week.  Students and parents will remain in their car at all times.  Parents will be directed to follow the "bus loop" between IES and BBMS, where we will direct you to pick up promotion certificates and any awards they may earn (Perfect Attendance, Academic, and Achievement Awards).  Items will be handed to you in your car.  Please have your student's name written clearly on a sheet of paper and place that on your dashboard.

Arrival Times:

10:00 - last names starting with A - D

10:15 - last names starting with E - G

10:30 - last names starting with H - K

10:45 - last names starting with L - O

11:45 - please feel free to use this time if you are unable to be there during your scheduled arrival.

BBMS Staff will be there to line the sidewalks and areas near that loop to wave, cheer, and celebrate as you drive through the bus loop.  Please feel free to make posters, bring balloons, etc.  We have purchased two large banners and balloon towers to make it feel festive for our students.

We hope to make this a special day for our 8th graders!!  We know they deserve it!

If you are unable to make it to this event, we will create additional days over the summer for you to stop by BBMS to pick up your child's certificate and any awards they may have earned.

Please contact if you have any questions related to this event.  Go Sharks!

Dear BBMS Families,

We hope this note finds your family safe and healthy amidst so much turbulence in our world.  The news of Mr. Floyd's killing has shaken all of us and that impact carries a tremendous weight into our community.  The pain we feel has deep feelings and emotions and we would normally be able to find comfort and support from others in a safe place; and for many, that safe place would be Bonnie Branch Middle School.  Right now, that just isn't possible and we feel more distant than ever from you, our students, and each other as staff members.  And as we reflect on the events surrounding this terrible event, we hope that BBMS is that safe place for you and your students.  And if it isn't, we hope that you will help us find a way to improve our efforts so we can fully support each and every one of our students.

Included in this message are resources that you can use as a family.  Please reach out to us if we can be a support to you, your student, or if you just want to talk.

The HCPSS Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion shared many resources with us this week. I have chosen some to share with you today as we begin, or continue, our journey on supporting children and developing empathic citizens.

  • Beyond the Golden Rule ( beyond_golden_rule.pdf ) is a tremendous resource from Teaching Tolerance. It is written for parents; however, the information is significant to educators and how we communicate with our students.

  • There is an abundance of resources just waiting to empower you to be a more effective player in the quest for equity and justice. Please use this plan just as it is, or adapt it to a sector, an ethnic/racial group, or interest area. For 21 days, do one action to further your understanding of power, privilege, supremacy, oppression, and equity.

  • The following article helps parents learn how to support your children during scary times by validating their feelings and having challenging conversations.  With protests over the violent deaths of black Americans dominating the news, it’s understandable that many kids are feeling scared, confused or angry about the situation.

Thank you for reading my message and for acknowledging that there is pain and suffering that is happening in our communities.  Thank you for taking the time to read and reflect upon this text and thank you for supporting your students and BBMS.  Together, we will be able to find a way to strengthen our community that helps educate and empower each of our students to be successful, caring citizens.

Go Sharks.
